Cardiff Lib Dems react to imminent loss of city's NextBike bike hire service

11 Dec 2023

Responding to news that NextBike will withdraw it's well-established bike hire scheme from Cardiff from 31 December due to on-going issues with its bikes being vandalised, the leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Cardiff Council, Councillor Rodney Berman, said:

“This is a devastating blow for many residents who rely on using NextBikes and it will have a significant negative impact on Cardiff Council’s transport strategy in trying to help more of us who are able to do so to find ways to travel other than by private car.

“As someone who commutes to work by bike myself, I found the NextBike service invaluable at the start of 2023 when my own bike was stolen and I was waiting for my insurance settlement to come through before I could replace it. The service wasn’t always perfect as I did sometimes have to hunt around to find a bike and sometimes the bikes weren’t usable when you did track them down. However, I did find it was just about good enough to use.

“I really do hope that the council can find an alternative provider and that they can do so quickly. Otherwise, we’re going to fail on the ambition of seeking to reduce congestion on our roads – something that is very badly needed in our city.”
